In a significant development for the aerial firefighting sector, Aero-Flite, a Spokane-based company, has chosen Chico, California, as the location for its new hangar base. The decision was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by city officials, indicating Aero-Flite’s commitment to expanding its operations in the region.
Attributed to Aero-Flite’s general manager, Chris Niemann, the move reflects a strategic choice after a decade of operating in Chico. Niemann emphasized the importance of finding the right combination of factors for the expansion, including the airport’s size, hangar facilities, and the overall appeal of the location for current and prospective employees.
“For us, it was about finding the perfect fit – an airport and community that align with our needs and values,” Niemann stated. Aero-Flite, boasting a 60-year legacy, specializes in aerial firefighting, utilizing a fleet of converted airliners to drop fire retardant in collaboration with agencies such as Cal Fire and the US Forest Service.
Chico Airport manager, Tom Bahr, provided insight into the company’s initial steps in setting up its operations at the new base. Although the process is in its early stages, Bahr noted that Aero-Flite commenced activities on March 1, marking the beginning of what promises to be an impactful presence at the airport.
Mayor Andrew Coolidge of Chico expressed his enthusiasm for the development, highlighting the enhanced firefighting capabilities it brings to the region. “The addition of Aero-Flite strengthens our firefighting infrastructure, reaffirming Chico’s role as a central hub for firefighting operations in the Northstate,” Coolidge remarked. He also underscored the economic benefits associated with Aero-Flite’s presence, signaling potential growth opportunities for the city.
In summary, Aero-Flite’s expansion into Chico signifies a significant milestone for both the company and the region. With its expertise in aerial firefighting and a commitment to community engagement, Aero-Flite’s presence is poised to bolster firefighting efforts and contribute to the economic vitality of Chico and the surrounding areas.
